Why Software Engineering?

Introduction

In my final year of high school, all of my friends were busy preparing for their college pursuits. Everyone seemed to have a clear direction—they were choosing their majors and researching universities. Like them, I was also thinking seriously about what path I wanted to take. As you may now, I'm currently a Computer Science student. However, at that time, I had already set my mind on Civil Engineering. It was a field I was genuinely interested in, and I could clearly imagine myself pursuing it.

Uncertain Option

But, things did not go exactly as planned. I was diagnosed with Partial Color Blind, which meant that continuing in Civil Engineering might not be the best option for me. When I received the results, I felt discouraged and fretted. It was difficult to accept that something beyond my control could affect my future so significantly. For a moment, I felt lost, as if the path I had imagined was suddenly no longer available.

But life does not stop at disappointment. I realized that I still had the opportunity to choose a different direction and still with the one that I could grow into and enjoy. That was when I began to seriously consider other fields, including computer science.

The Social Network

Interestingly, my initial interest in computer science came from something very unexpected, a movie. It was The Social Network. As I watched the movie, I was fascinated how Mark could do that, how could he build a transformative app that can change how people interact?

That curiosity led me to learn more about his background, and I discovered that he studied computer science at Harvard and now he's also known as CEO of Meta and a software engineer. From that moment, the more I read and discovered, the more interested I became. Like a small spark that slowly grew ✨.

Deeper Passion

Over time, I have developed a strong passion in one of computer science specialization which is software engineering. I love it because it allows me to create, solve problems, and bring ideas to life through technology.

Some people might think that software engineering is simply about writing code, but it is much more than that. Coding is just one part of the process. At its core, software engineering is about understanding problems, thinking critically, and designing solutions that are both effective and efficient. It involves analyzing user needs, planning how a system should work, and continuously improving it over time.

For me, what makes software engineering exciting is the process behind it. It starts with identifying a problem, then brainstorming ideas, and finally transforming those ideas into a functional system. This journey from concept to implementation is both challenging and rewarding. It requires not only technical skills but also creativity and team communication.

Moreover, software engineering has a real impact on people's lives. The applications we build can help others communicate, learn, work, and solve everyday problems more easily. Knowing that something I create could potentially make someone's life better is what motivates me to keep learning and improving.

Conclusion
